Climate Change has my full attention. This Tumblr mostly goes about the changing climate, but also about e.g. the Eiffel tower in Paris, France.
I believe that science can do a lot to help us to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change and other enviromental problems.
I realize that politician and big companies will do nothing to solve the problems untill activist citizens and shareholders force them to do something. It needs activist in all forms and ways to protect our Earth and future from disaster.

If you use 1950 as “present” or “0” and use ice cores to determine global temperatures and atmospheric CO2 you’ll find that CO2, surprise surprise, does correspond with temps. Of course don’t worry, Jesus made the earth 4,000 years ago, I’m a liar, Obama paid me to say this with your tax money, this is all some big hoax to give poor people a rich capitalist’s money or something, nothing bad is ever going to happen to you, America is perfect, the UN is stupid, scientists aren’t that smart, community college drop outs on talk radio, and Congressmen who represent districts that deny biological evolution of humanity are sound scientific authorities…I hope humanity can sleep at night.

Crowd-Sourcing Helps Map Global Emissions

Climate science researchers from Arizona State Univ. are launching a first-of-its-kind online “game” to better understand the sources of global warming gases. By engaging “citizen scientists,” the researchers hope to locate all the power plants around the world and quantify their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

The game has officially begun and is housed on a website called “Ventus.” Ventus (the Latin word for wind) has a simple interface in which users enter basic information about the world’s power plants. By playing the game, people around the globe can help solve the climate change problem.

Read more: http://www.laboratoryequipment.com/videos/2013/05/crowd-sourcing-helps-map-global-emissions

30 out of more than 100 strikers are being tube-fed as the protest hits a grim milestone

Detainees at Guantanamo Bay prison camp on Friday reached the 100th day of a hunger strike that began in February and has grown to include more than 100 inmates. According to official numbers, which the detainees’ lawyers say are too low, 102 detainees are currently striking, and 30 are being force-fed.

The strike, which according to the detainees’ attorneys began in response to guards removing detainees’ personal affects, swiftly grew into a protest against the camp that has held many men for over a decade without charge. Eighty-six of the 166 prisoners in the prison have been cleared for release by President Obama’s own Review Task Force.

Friday’s grim milestone, noted Kevin Gosztola, was marked with protests “all over the world, in front of the White House and in London, Sydney, New York City, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Anchorage, Eureka, California, Amherst, Massachusetts, Toledo, Ohio, and Charlottesville, Virginia. The demands by Amnesty International and other human rights groups are to transfer detainees cleared for release and appoint a high-level official to lead the effort to close Guantanamo.”

Omar Farah, staff attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights, commented:

As the hunger strike at Guantanamo passes its 100th day, my clients’ bodies are breaking down, but their resolve and spirit have never been stronger. When I met with Tariq Ba Odah on April 30, he told me: “We have nothing left to lose, but I have never seen such high morale in the prisoners. We will endure anything to be free.” That same day, President Obama vowed again to close Guantanamo. Words are not enough. After 11 years of indefinite detention without charge or trial, Tariq and the others trapped at the prison cannot wait any longer. The president must use every tool at his disposal to release the prisoners he will not try in a fair court and finally shutter Guantanamo, once and for all. Every day he delays tempts an awful fate.

Melting Glaciers Cause 1/3 of the World’s Sea Level Rise

by Stephanie Pappas

The world’s glaciers lost 260 gigatons of water each year between 2003 and 2009, making these rivers of ice responsible for almost a third of sea-level rise in that time, new research finds.

The study, to appear tomorrow (May 17) in the journal Science, used multiple methods to pin down estimates of how much ice is lost from glaciers. The results suggest that on-the-ground measurements yield estimates that are too extreme, but some satellite methods don’t go far enough…

A group of volunteers have given up their time over the last few years to answer the question, once and for all, as to whether the “science is settled”.

People will generally defer to the judgment of experts, and they trust climate scientists on the subject of global warming.

To resolve this question once and for all, we reviewed the abstracts (paragraph-long summaries) of over 12,000 peer-reviewed scientific papers published between 1991 and 2011 with the keywords “global warming” and “global climate change.” Our team was comprised of a citizen science team of two dozen volunteers from around the world. Team members’ home countries included Australia, USA, Canada, UK, New Zealand, Germany, Finland, and Italy.

Most of the ratings were done by a dozen team members, who each read more than a thousand abstracts in their spare time over the span of several months. Analysing the data and writing the paper took close to another year after that. We didn’t receive any funding or compensation for our efforts; it was entirely a voluntary effort driven by the desire to settle the issue of scientific climate consensus once and for all.

This animation shows dramatic changes in Greenland’s ice mass from 2003 through 2011. Created with data from NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), it reveals how much ice has been lost and gained each year. It provides striking visible evidence that Greenland has been losing large amounts of water into the ocean as surface ice melts and glaciers discharge more ice into the sea.

NASA launched GRACE in 2002 to obtain high-resolution, global measurements of Earth’s gravity field from space. After 10 years, GRACE continues to reveal increasingly subtle changes in Earth’s gravity field. These gravity variations reflect changes in the distribution of Earth’s mass, including changes in water storage in river basins on land, changes in ice mass in Greenland and Antarctica, ocean mass changes, and even changes caused by large earthquakes. GRACE data are substantially improving our knowledge of important aspects of global change, including the climate consequences of a warming world.

As GRACE’s twin satellites pass over features on Earth, the distance between the satellites changes ever so slightly in response to the mass of these features. Extremely sensitive instruments on GRACE can measure changes in the distance between the twin satellites to an accuracy of 1 micrometer (one-millionth of a meter), which is 20 to 100 times smaller than the width of a human hair. As GRACE orbits, it provides data for scientists to construct a new map of Earth’s gravity field every month.

Despite the clean technology of the past decade, we continue to extract and burn fossil fuels more than ever before

The industrial revolution that kick-started the human impact on the climate was driven by just such a feedback. The steam engine enabled us to drain coal mines, providing…

Given what is at stake, it is no wonder that governments agree global warming must be stopped. But that is where the common sense ends and the cognitive dissonance…
